HOW DUMB ARE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE?
Would it be uncharitable of me to point out that Joe Klein is paid to follow the vagaries of the federal government while most of us aren't? Wouldn't complaining about the idiocy of those who've rendered the government incomprehensible be better than complaining about how poorly informed people are who are just trying to scrape together a living doing something other studying the federal government?

It remains to be seen whether the bill that emerges is the worst of your lifetime. The Interstate Highway Defense Act is pretty hard to beat. Was that within your lifetime?

Oh, Rick, you're showing your age. That is, like, so 1960. Today's politics is about power and only about power. Government by enumerated powers? Puh-leeze. You get enough votes, you do whatever you want.
Heh. I may be long in the tooth but getting elected still requires a little persuasive rhetoric. Afterwards, not so much.

OBAMA: NOWHERE TO HIDE ON IRAQ
You're missing the humor of the situation, Rick. Sen. Obama's first posture was that his position against the invasion of Iraq—before he was in the Senate and while many Democratic Senators voted in support of the invasion—qualified him for the presidency. That was the basis on which he opposed the surge.
Now his position is that the success of the surge makes his eagerness to withdraw from Iraq just that more possible. That's not a pivot, it's a pirouette, a veronica.

OBAMA: NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME - EVER
Rick, what Obama said has been the prevailing wisdom in the non-pacifist Left for quite some time now. There's no dearth of examples. The general scenario is invade Pakistan (where the real war on terror is) and go after the al-Qaeda folks there. You see it's not invasion if we don't plan on removing the present Pakistani government.
My own view is that the plan is, well, not particularly bright. At the very least such an incursion will weaken the Musharraf government which is already teetering. It risks our troops having nuclear weapons used against them or nuclear weapons falling into the hands of Pakistan's radical Islamists.
The plan has almost no upside. Al-Qaeda in Pakistan will be free to flee to Tajikistan, India, or China, just as they were free to flee to Pakistan from Afghanistan. Logistical issues aside I can't imagine our forces chasing al-Qaeda through most of central Asia.

It's actually very, very simple. All that schools need to do is use poverty rather than race as their method for classifying students for purposes of balancing. That's it.
I can't help but feel there's some unstated problem here, a ghost at the feast. I don't know what it is. Concerns that support for funding the education the children of all the people out of the public purse will evaporate? Concerns about stratification within African American society? That's already happening, too.
My mom used to say that the schoolroom was the last kingdom. Could that be it? Are school administrators just accustomed to getting their own way?
